π The Romance & Relationship
I’ve learned that romantasy romances can be hit or miss. It felt like Vic and Xan had a slow burn romance going on, but then the end felt like it rushed that a bit. There was a lot at stake during the end, so it’s understandable, but I’m curious to see where their relationship goes now. It literally went from hot and cold, zero to a hundred.Β

π₯ The Characters
Vic
Considering my review on all the other characters, it might be surprising (or not) to say that I really enjoyed Vic’s character! She went from her brother’s keeper, and protector, to living her own life and making choices just for herself. She wanted to learn magic, so she eventually did. She wanted to belong, so she’s searching for that.Β
Henry
Out of everyone, I felt like Henry fit his age the most. He was a typical teenager, doing what everyone thought was best. I’m a bit confused on if he’s meant to be a main character as well, or just another side character? Considering the plot was Vic protecting Henry, I thought he’d be more present throughout the whole book.Β
Alexandros
Xan, the mysterious shadowy man, who just also happens to be the fighting instructor. He’s in his thirties and yet can’t communicate his feelings properly. Every time he told Vic to leave, run, or just go anywhere but the castle, he didn’t really explain all he knew. I would’ve rather he played the role of protector and looked out for her than constantly telling her to leave.
Max
The Elders of the society were so mysterious, I couldn’t help but be intrigued! Max with his raven were so calm, it added to the suspense. Is he telling the truth or is he hiding something? We’ll have to keep reading to find out!
Aren
As much as Aren is painted to be the “villain” in this first book, I’m so curious to see what happens to his character! He has a very shady and manipulative way of doing things, but that doesn’t always mean he’s the true villain.
Sarah
Sarah was such sunshine in the book! She really added that lighthearted and funny aspect that kept the book from being too melancholy. Her and May give grumpy x sunshine duo and I’m lowkey hoping for a spinoff with them in the series!

βοΈ The Setting & Style
What I Loved:
I absolutely loved the world-building in this! It’s what captivated me in the first place and had me binging the first hundred or so pages. Who doesn’t love a secret society?! Its so much more than that though, with monsters, magic tiers, and more!
What Could’ve Been Better:
Trying my best not to spoil, but with how the book ends, I truly wished we saw how close Henry and Vic were/are. Sure they grew up relying on each other because their mom was often away, but that’s typical sibling behavior. Being older, of course Vic would want to protect Henry. But to what extent does their sibling closeness go? Would they kill for each other? Truly die for each other? We all know Vic would, but would Henry?Β
